San Pedro de Atacama festivals calendar: what is celebrated, and when

San Pedro de Atacama's year mixes fixed and moveable dates. Fixed: the patron-saint feast of Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, Candlemas on 2 February, Chile's national days on 18 and 19 September, and the town's communal anniversary on 24 November. Moveable: carnival, Holy Week and the canal-cleaning rituals, set each year by the liturgical calendar or by each community.

What this calendar covers, and how to use it

There is no year in this page's title or in its address, and that is deliberate. Most of what San Pedro de Atacama celebrates falls on the same date every year; the ones that move do not move at random, but follow a rule — the liturgical calendar, the solstice, an agreement reached inside each community — and the rule repeats too. A page called "festivals 2023" has to be rewritten every January and is wrong for the other eleven months.

So the calendar is organised around that distinction, which is the only one that helps someone planning a trip: first what you can put in a diary months ahead, then what you can only put in as a window and confirm closer to the date.

One honesty note that applies to everything below: where a festival has no fixed date, you will find the rule or the month here, never a day invented to make the list look precise. Moveable dates are confirmed by the municipality and by the communities themselves shortly beforehand, and that is where they should be checked.

Which dates are fixed?

These land on the same day every year. The source is the municipal calendar and, for the patron-saint feast, the event record published by the town's culture and tourism foundation.

When is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul?

29 June, always. It is the patron-saint feast and the anchor of the ritual year. Chile's Ministry of Cultures says so plainly in the Intangible Cultural Heritage record for the town's traditional dances:

Todos confluyen el 29 de junio -día de San Pedro y San Pablo- como hito principal de sus respectivos calendarios rituales.

— Ministry of Cultures / SIGPA — Traditional dances of San Pedro de Atacama

(In English: all of them converge on 29 June — the day of Saints Peter and Paul — as the main milestone of their respective ritual calendars.)

On that day the dance brotherhoods process from the ayllus — the outlying farming hamlets — into the centre of San Pedro de Atacama and its church, dancing to drums, guitars and flutes, each brotherhood a recognised kinship network within the community. This is not a show staged for visitors. It is a town celebrating itself, and it is watched with that in mind.

The part nobody tells you: the feast is the 29th, the day off may not be

In Chile the 29 June public holiday is transferable. The labour authority states the rule: the holidays of 29 June and 12 October move to the Monday of the week in which they occur when they fall on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and to the Monday of the following week when they fall on a Friday.

What that means for your trip: the celebration in town is on 29 June whatever day of the week it lands on, while the long weekend that fills northern Chile's hotels may sit on a different Monday. Come for the feast, look at the date. Come to avoid the crowd, look at the holiday.

When is carnival in San Pedro de Atacama?

In February or early March, before Lent begins — never the same date two years running. The municipality says so itself:

Las fechas exactas del carnaval pueden variar cada año, ya que están determinadas por el calendario litúrgico y las tradiciones locales.

— Municipalidad de San Pedro de Atacama — Municipal Calendar

It is also not one day or one place: carnival starts in one community and travels to the others. In a recent season's municipal calendar it opened in the Ayllu de Tulor, moved to Coyo the next day, and only on the third day did all the communities join in. If you are travelling for carnival, the question is not "what date is it" but "where does it start this year and how does it rotate".

The municipality describes it as a celebration of fertility, harvest and life itself, with music, dance, rituals and offerings to the Pachamama. An Andean carnival — not a parade with floats.

Which celebrations have no fixed date?

Four big ones, each pinned by a different rule.

Moveable festivals and the rule that sets each year's date
FestivalWhat sets the dateUsual window
CarnivalThe liturgical calendar: it falls before Lent begins, and each community sets its own opening day.February or early March
Holy WeekThe liturgical calendar, as everywhere else in Chile; Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the days the municipality marks.March or April
National Day of Indigenous PeoplesStatute: Law 21.357 makes the day of the southern-hemisphere winter solstice a public holiday each year, so the date moves with the solstice.Around 20 and 21 June
Canal cleaning (talatur)Each community, following its farming cycle and its own agreement. There is no single date for the whole comuna.Varies by community

The canal cleaning deserves its own paragraph, because it is the one that most resists a calendar. It is the communal work of clearing the irrigation channels and their intakes, with a ritual half that asks for water, and each community organises it separately: in Socaire it happens in October — local sources disagree on the exact day, which is precisely the point — while in Toconao the cleaning of the Jere river has been held in the first week of February. It is not a tourist-agenda event. It is the farming life of an oasis, and if it coincides with your visit, it coincided.

What about the villages around town?

The comuna is much larger than the town of San Pedro. Each village has its own church and patron saint, and its patronal feast is held around that saint's day, on the date the community itself sets.

Add to that 1 August, the day of the Pachamama in the Andean communities of the region: not a municipal event with a printed programme, but offerings to the earth made in homes and communities.

How do festivals affect a trip?

Three concrete effects, in order of how badly they can wreck a plan.

Accommodation. Chilean long weekends — Saints Peter and Paul, Fiestas Patrias — fill San Pedro de Atacama with domestic travellers. This is not the international high season; it is a short, sharp spike. If your trip touches one of those weekends, book lodging and tours weeks ahead, not days.

Shops. Chile has irrenunciable holidays, on which retail closes by law: 1 January, 1 May, 18 and 19 September and 25 December. In a desert town where almost everything is solved on two streets, that bites harder than it would in a city. Buy what you need the day before.

Getting around. On 29 June the procession moves through town from the ayllus to the church, right through the centre. It is the best day of the year to be there on foot and the worst to assume you will drive across the centre whenever you like. Allow extra time for transfers and pickups that day.

Do the stargazing tours run during holidays?

Yes, with four fixed exceptions. Our tours do not operate on the nights of 24, 25 and 31 December, or 1 January — the only dates closed by rule all year, and closed by company decision rather than by weather.

The rest of the calendar runs normally, including 29 June and Fiestas Patrias. On those days the combination is a good one: the town celebrating until sundown, the sky untouched afterwards. What does change is the logistics — with the town full, pickup and the return leg take longer than usual.

How this calendar is maintained

This page is reviewed once a year, and the review date is the update date shown above. That is the reason it carries no year in the title: instead of publishing a fresh version every January and leaving the old ones to rot in Google, there is one page that gets corrected.

What the annual review checks: that the fixed dates are still the same dates, that no statute has changed the rule behind a moveable one, and that the festivals described are still being held. What the review does not do is guess the exact day of a moveable feast for the current year — that is what the municipality and the communities publish, once they have decided it.

And at night, the other calendar

While the town celebrates below, something else is going on above: the core of the Milky Way is at its best in June and July — the same months as the patron-saint feast.
